How Goals Work
For Mentees
As a mentee, you have full control over your goals:
- Create goals anytime from your dashboard
- Edit or delete goals as your priorities change
- Add progress notes to track your journey (private to you)
- Mark complete when you achieve a goal
- Share reflections about what helped you succeed
For Mentors
Mentors have read-only visibility to support you better:
- View your goals (titles and descriptions only)
- See completion status to track your progress
- Count of progress notes (but not the actual content—those are private!)
- Read achievement reflections when you complete goals
- Receive notifications when you hit milestones

For Program Managers
Program managers can:
- View member goals across the program
- See achievement reflections to understand impact
- Cannot see your private progress notes
- Cannot edit or create goals for you
Setting Your First Goals
Goals are introduced during your onboarding, but you can add more anytime!
What Makes a Good Goal?
✅ Be Specific - Define exactly what you want to achieve
✅ Start with Action - Use verbs like "Build", "Launch", "Learn", "Achieve"
✅ Make it Measurable - Include metrics, milestones, or timelines
Example:
❌ "Get better at leadership"
✅ "Attain a management position within six months by developing leadership and decision-making skills"
Tips for Goal Setting
- Set 3-5 goals to start (you can add more later)
- Focus on what matters to your career or personal growth
- Make them actionable - goals you can actually work toward
- Review regularly with your mentor during sessions
Tracking Your Progress
The real power of Mentorly Goals comes from tracking your journey, not just the destination.
Progress Notes (Private)
Progress notes are only visible to you—they're your private journal to document your journey while working toward a goal.
When to add progress notes:
- After a mentoring session with key insights
- When you hit a milestone or make progress
- When facing challenges you want to remember
- To reflect on what's working (or not)
Example progress notes:
- "Talked with mentor about go-to-market strategies, exploring competitive positioning"
- "Led first standup meeting today—nervous but team was supportive"
- "Reading Radical Candor, lots of insights on giving feedback"
Develop skills to lead my team effectively and make confident decisions

🔒 Privacy: Progress notes are completely private to you. Your mentor can see that you have 3 notes, but cannot read their content. Click "Add progress note" to try it!
Achievement Reflections (Visible)
When you mark a goal complete, you'll be asked to reflect on what helped you achieve it. These reflections are visible to your mentor and program manager.
What to include:
- What strategies worked
- How your mentor helped
- Challenges you overcame
- Key learning moments
Example: "Weekend study groups were key to passing my certification. My mentor's framework for breaking down complex topics really helped structure my learning."
Celebrating Success
When you complete a goal, Mentorly celebrates with you!
Goal Celebration
When you complete a goal, Mentorly celebrates your achievement with confetti and a special message!
✨ Celebration: Click the button to see the real celebration modal! In the actual app, this appears automatically when you mark a goal as complete, with confetti animation.
You'll see:
- 🎉 Confetti animation - because wins deserve celebration!
- 📝 Reflection prompt - share what helped you succeed
- 🔔 Mentor notification - your mentor will receive an update about your achievement

Frequently Asked Questions
